Training / Exercise: |
| The spectrum of courses, seminars, and curricula available from the NCEP/VUMC addresses the scope of WMD / Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) preparedness needs. Training is provided in traditional “classroom” style formats, distance learning, seminars and workshops, and other learning formats as needed. The goal of the National Center is develop an integrated and comprehensive curriculum addressing the various needs associated with WMD preparedness and response. The NCEP/VUMC is proud of its tradition of excellence in the quality of the training provided. Comprehensive instructor development and Quality Improvement programs are integral to these efforts. |

Technical Assistance and Planning: |
| The NCEP provides assistance to government, institutions, and other entities in the areas of planning, assessing, exercising, and program development for operational purposes related to MCI. The experience and expertise available through the NCEP staff and faculty is significant in both breadth and depth. Services are provided at all governmental levels (local, state, regional, national, and international levels) and for private, as well as public sector entities. |

Clinical Training and Education: |
| The School of Nursing has established itself as a prominent leader in distance learning techniques, primarily centered around videostreaming course content to students across the country. In addition, they have been innovators with online testing and evaluation, using the web based system Prometheus. Through the work of the International Nursing Coalition for Mass Casualty Education, core competencies have been developed for all nurses that will be reflected in course content. The School of Medicine has the unique experience of developing data mining tools to assess curriculum content and have been examining ways to make specific content more interactive. |

Educational and Operational Research: |
| The NCEP/VUMC is engaged in a variety of research projects funded through various grants and contracts. Of significant note is the research being undertaken by the faculty and scientists affiliated with the Learning Sciences Institute (LSI) located within Peabody College. The core goal of the LSI is to transform education by enlarging understanding of the different ways people learn and by designing innovative new teaching practices that meet the diverse needs of learners. The LSI will serve as the lead research and development component of the U.S. Department of Justice’s proposal for establishing standardized instructor development and evaluative objective measures for its curricula of courses nationwide |
